Collectibles, not toys Jan 06, 2009 By Dixie Diamond "DD"
I've owned Breyers for almost 30 years, and love them, but I think it's fair to say that they are better collectibles than toys. If you want toys, try the Ponies series (the ones with hair), or get the Schleich animals that are made of flexible plastic.

These are very small (1" to 1.5" tall) and delicate. They are lovely and would be fine for older, careful, kids, but they are not intended for hard play and will not hold up. I don't consider this a problem; it's mostly a matter of expectation (don't expect them to take being sat-on, chewed-on, or thrown around). The flip side is that they are nicer than a lot of rough-play toy horses, and there is a big model horse hobby behind them from which a kid can learn a lot about horses, crafts, etc.

My granddaughter (8) received a starter set for Christmas and loved it. We're adding to it because playing with it is her favorite pasttime. The pieces are extremely well made. Her sister (5) enjoys it too, so we can see it being used for a long time.

This is a small but very cute horse and kitten play set. My 7-year-old granddaughter loves it! Package arrived quickly even during Christmas season. I would recommend this toy for horse lovers 5 and up. The kittens are too small for younger children in my opinion.
