Peg loom Dec 28, 2006
By ANSSO My niece asked me for this item for Christmas. She loves to do crafts and she is a very talented 5 year old girl. This item also keeps her occupied and provides gifts for her aunt (me). I think it is a fantastic item because it helps her with her fine motor skills, and it shortens the time she watches TV.

I admit it, this toy was for me, the Mom Oct 10, 2011
By Char My son is in kindergarten and always wants to help me knit when he sees me knitting. So I thought weaving would give him a way to get his fingers into some fiber in a way that would be satisfying (not too frustrating or slow-going). His interest has been fleeting so far, but I keep it around for when the mood strikes. He does show an interest from time to time.
Meanwhile, I have had a jolly good time with it! I'm enjoying it's mobility, and am currently working on weaving with big chunky lopi yarn (100% wool), then sewing two panels together into a small pouch, then felting it. I think the possibilities are endless with this device.
Beware: if you weave too tightly, you will achieve an hourglass-shaped piece at the end, so it's worth youtubing a video on beginning pegloom weaving or something like that to keep the tension even. Likewise, any peg loom with this design but larger than this would be very hard to manage--it's very hard to prevent that hourglass phenomenon if the loom is too big.
Also, the yarn that comes with this loom is nice, although the colors may not appeal to everyone (naturally). A good local yarn shop (or an on-line one if need be) could provide lots of inspiration. The loom itself is nice quality, providing a wonderfully aesthetic experience for learning to weave. I must say, I feel proud that this beautiful product was made in the USA.)
And one more thing: this might make a nice gift companion for a book called Weaving the Rainbow.

nice loom, but a little hard for 5-year old Dec 06, 2010
By Evelyn My sister bought this loom for my 5-year old. He loves it and has no trouble weaving in and out--but he is not quite careful enough to avoid "bunching" of the piece he's creating. To make it look decent, he needs a fair amount of supervision--though he also doesn't seem to care about the bunching, so all in all, it's a hit.
He has not yet finished anything because he tends to take out rows of weaving too. I'm not quite sure why. Again, this also isn't a problem for him, given that he doesn't seem to care about producing a finished piece.
In short, the "suggested age" of 8 is probably right if what you're looking for is a kit with which a child can create a beautiful piece of weaving. My 5-year old is having fun with it though.

Not for my 5 year old. Nov 18, 2008
By R. Arellano The instructions aren't clear. I've had a hard time with it. I introduced it to my 5 year old. It sit on a shelf untouched. Hopefully in a few months she'll work with it again. I think it's for an older 6 year old.
Not so much a toy as a tool.... Aug 26, 2011
By M. Bohrer This loom is perfect for what it is designed for which islearning to weave. The wooden frame is durable and easy to manage for my 5 year old. She quickly took to the weaving of the beautiful yarns (included) and has enjoyed the calm activity of it. I had bought a potholder maker for it but that turned out to be too difficult to manage but this is so much easier for her. She was very proud to finish her first piece and display it. A wonderful introduction if you're beginning to expose to the fiber arts.
