A little more fun than the non-talking Thomas engines Jan 01, 2011
By Talvi This Talking James is for the Thomas wooden sets (there is a TrackMaster talking James too, that's the larger plastic set that is motorized). James has a little black button on the top of his cab that is easy to press (though fairly non-obvious as it is flush) and it makes James' light come on while he says something. He says three typical James things: "Fizzling fireboxes!", "I'm a splendid red engine", and "Mind my paintwork". There's also one train whistle sound. James comes with his tender as well, which is attached via magnets. My 3 year old just calls it James' "special car."
We had it for a month of heavy pressing when the battery wore out, and were afraid it would be expensive to get new batteries. We were really happy to find the AG13 button batteries (James needs two of them) at an astounding price of fifty batteries for five dollars. You need a tiny-sized screwdriver and the batteries are very easy to exchange out.
He loves playing with James, who gets as much attention as his Take and Play Chocolate Percy. The talking and lights make James a little more interesting than the other wooden Sodor engines.
Fun if it works Apr 15, 2012
By T. Stubblefield I bought one of these for my son from Amazon. When it came, it did not work at all. They sent a second one and just the music played, but the light did not work. On the third train, the light worked, but the music didn't play. I have given up. Three faulty products had my son very flustered.
If you still want to buy this, plan on wasting even more money on a new battery to put in it and even then, who knows if it will work right.
batteries upon delivery were dead :( Dec 16, 2011
By maria I bought this for my grandson and when it arrived, of course, I tried it to make sure he would be happy with it. James did not talk because the batteries were dead :( I was able to replace the batteries and it works...for now. I am disappointed that I had this extra expense though...when a toy comes with batteries included, they should work.
Fizzling Fireboxes! Apr 18, 2011
By E. Kennedy This is really fun for anyone who likes Thomas and Friends. The talking trains make a great addition to anyone's Thomas play set. I've noticed it adds even more fun to creative playtime!
Still fun, but doesn't talk Mar 18, 2011
By Jane We received this and the train doesn't talk. We thought the battery was worn down, and replaced it (it uses watch batteries, so these should last!), and within a day it didn't work anymore. Disappointing.
