5WHEN YOU CONSIDER THE QUALITY AND THE NOVELTY AND THE PRICE...This is a good buy  Nov 23, 2011 By D. Blankenship
For the cost this is a pretty nice yoyo. I was glad to be able to add this one to my collection, simply for the novelty aspect, if nothing else.

Yomega, overall makes a nice yoyo and I own several different models. This one of course, lights up as you use it. The lights begin as you touch it and anytime it is in motion. The battery is quiet easy to replace. The yoyo comes with the required two 1.5 volt AG# batteries already installed. This yoyo also comes with an extra string (more about that later), a tube of Yomega's Brain Lube (more about that later), and a instructional DVD (more about that later). First though we need to look at the performance.

The first thing that you must remember is that every yoyo acts differently. Granted, many of these differences are quite subtle and the beginner may not notice them; but differences there are. This even includes yoyos of the same make and model. It should also be noted that a yoyo for under twenty dollars, such as this one will not and cannot be expected to behave like a high-end Kuhn or even like a high-end Yomega or Duncan. But that being said, good yoyos in this price range are well...good! This is a good yoyo to start with as it performs like a yoyo should. One of the biggest mistakes for the new user is buying one of those little five dollar jobs at the five-and-dime store. They don't work all that well and the new user can become quite discouraged right from the start. The behavior and performance of this yoyo being reviewed is good and quite adequate for what you are paying for.

This yoyo is just a bit heavier that you would normally expect from a plastic model of this size. I suppose this is due to the batteries and minor electric gear enclosed inside. This is a good thing though. When it comes to "sleep time" the weight of the yoyo is one of the most important factors to consider...the more weight (in general), the longer the sleep time. A light yoyo, not matter how hard you throw it, you will not get the long sleep time you need for sleeper type tricks...that is simply a fact. Also, this particular model is just a bit thicker that some other yoyos you may find which for an adult is good, but for a small child with small hands, can become a problem. I personally like an extremely heavy yoyo, but then I have been fooling with these things for over 60 years now and do not mind (much) the pain cause by a quick return and a sloppy catch.

This yoyo does come with an extra string. This is good. But that being said, if you find that your child (or you, the adult) becomes fascinated with these things, and this quite often happens, I would suggest you purchase a large supply of strings. A string that is worn or dirty is not a good thing. If I am using one of my heavier metal yoyos, I can get about two or three hours of heavy practice out of a string before it snaps. You need lots of replacements if you practice a lot. The strings provided her are cotton which is my preferred material. Many like mixed fabric, which do indeed seem to last a bit longer, but for me the mixed fabric strings simply do not "feel" right. And a note on string length here: The string that comes on and with this yoyo is pretty standard and it should be remembered that people are different; longer arms, shorter legs, different heights, etc. One size string does NOT fit all. It is recommended that the strong, when fully installed, should end just above the belly button. I personally use a longer string, but that is personal preference. (The DVD shows how to change the length of a string and how to install a new one.) One of the biggest reasons yoyos get smashed is that the beginner will use a string that is too long. NO yoyo will take repeated high speed strikes on a hard surface without damage. On the other hand, the low cost of this yoyo and others in this price range make it possible to replace them at a relatively low cost as you smash them up.

The gap in this yoyo is standard. It is not a butterfly gap. This is okay and most tricks, both beginning and advanced can be performed with a standard gap but it needs to be noted, particularly for the beginner, that many of the string trips can be more easily performed on a butterfly. It is just a matter of skill level. This yoyo does have a ball bearing transaxle system which makes it a lot different than the old fixed axle systems of years gone by. This allows much longer sleep time and a much smoother action.

The DVD that comes with this yoyo is quite good. For those just beginning, there is a section called "Yoyo boot camp," which is invaluable and covers all the basics including maintenance. The directions are good at you have the ability to place it is slow mode. The DVD covers around 150 tricks from simple to extremely complex. The only down side (I have several copies of this particular DVD), is that the guys performing are extremely good and make the most complicated moves look easy. Folks, some of these tricks are not easy and require hours and hours of practice. The beginner should not become discouraged right from the start. Watch this DVD carefully and often...there is much to be learned on this one!

This package also include a vial of lubricant - Yomega Brain Lube. This is good stuff and the tube should last you a long, long time. Please note that a little of this stuff goes a long, long say and when they say "use only one small drop," they mean just that! (Note that there are different grades of this oil available and each individual will need to find which works best for them under various conditions and with various yoyos. The grade offered here works fine with me and is my overall choice for general use.)

I must say that I am in full agreement with another reviewer here who pointed out the fact that the more whistles and bells attached to a product such as this, the greater the chance for something to break. I have not had a problem...yet, but this is something to consider.

I am giving this one five stars simply because, for the price, it is a good, solid, well balanced yoyo and quite serviceable. It is well balance and well made. I also must tell you that I like the novelty of the lights as they do look pretty cool as you perform your tricks and besides, it was a nice one to add to my collection...a person simply cannot have too many yoyos!

4Fun to watch  Nov 10, 2010 By Casey
This is our 2nd Yoyo for the kids and the adults can't help but play with it as well. The attractive feature is the lights which makes you want to spin it and play with it often. This yoyo is considered Intermediate because it has a trans-axle. Our first yoyo is a Yomega Brain XP which is considered a beginner yoyo because it has the auto switch feature. The two yoyo's don't feel much different but the Lightbeam does seem to sleep a tad bit longer (by 3 to 5 seconds). I was expecting the trans-axle to spin noticeably longer but not so. We're expecting another Yoyo from Yomega (Maverick) which is in the Advanced category and has a bearing.

No negatives so far for the kids...the tricks that come on the DVD will be difficult to achieve with this yoyo. You really need an advanced or wing shaped yoyo for most string tricks such as the brain twister. The problem with string tricks and this yoyo is that there isn't enough space between the two sides of the yoyo for free spin. The friction is too great and the yoyo will quickly loose spin. I'm thinking a Wing shaped yoyo might be better.

We were a little disappointed in the color (nothing major but for a kid that's a big deal) as we were expecting a blue yoyo and we received an orange yoyo.

Overall the construction of the yoyo seems solid but if you hit it in the ground too many times as you release it you're bound to bend/break it. Our Yomega Brain XP is slightly bend around the axle and aside from a metal axle and lights there doesn't seem to be much difference in construction between this and the Yomega Brain XP.

4SIMPLE & FUN!!!  May 24, 2012 By M. Hyatt "AMAZON BUYER"
This is not a cheap wallet mart YoYo. I have always been a fan of simple toys and have enjoyed playing with the Yomega. It will provide any kid hours of fun. I would suggest this to anyone that has kids that are spending too much time on video games. I found this to be true after my daughter plays video games for hours and this is a great method of exercise and skill. While it will not compete with action games it does provide simple fun.

It is well made and has lasted over four months thus far. This is much better than a five dollar novelty YoYo that I purchased at the big walletmart store. It is priced very well thru Amazon and if you or your child needs a break from online or video type games, I found this to do the trick. I do like the lights and while it is not in the league of professional YoYo's, it will entertain people of all ages.

4Great Update of an Old-Fashioned Toy  Apr 02, 2012 By Katherine Berry "Venomous Kate"
I'd had a yo-yo when I was a kid, but could never do much with it. Eventually, I lost interest in trying to learn. Had I had the Yomega Lightbeam, with its excellent "how-to" DVD, I'd have become as avid a fan as my son.

We gave this to my son at Christmas, expecting that he'd take a look at it, give it a try, and set the thing aside in favor of the video games we can't seem to tear him away from. Instead, he loved the lights and how the yo-yo actually returned. (I couldn't master that at all when I was a kid, which might explain why my yo-yos always wound up in the trash after a few days.) Before long, he'd popped in the DVD and started teaching himself some of the more advanced tricks. And not many days after that, he was showing off to the neighbor kids who were also impressed with the cool light patterns and ease of use.

4a lot of fun, if you're into this.  Mar 15, 2012 By Just Trying to Help "Product Guru"
I have never gotten a Yo Yo that came with oil. But this thing is really technical so I think its needed. I mention this first in my review because I think you should decide if you want a yo yo that needs to be oiled now and then. It also comes with an extra string.

So this thing is quite serious, before you even get to the ball bearings.

The light show helps to bring users into the 21s century, we are all used to being dazzled a bit more than the kids of yesteryear.

The DVD is good quality, but, DVDs can only show you some ideas on what to do. Whats really needed is PRACTICE. Is your child willing to practice? Only you know.

I think this would be a good stocking stuffer for most kids.
